Midlands Tech Awarded Grant from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission

University News - On the Move

COLUMBIA, SC – Midlands Technical College (MTC) has been awarded US$150,000 in competitive federal grant funds from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to fund scholarships for students in MTC’s Nuclear Systems Technology program.

The scholarship program will provide educational access to qualified students, and will address the impending demand for nuclear operators in the region. Graduates of the program will help provide a pool of qualified workers capable of sustaining the safe and responsible growth of nuclear power in the Southeast.

MTC’s Nuclear Systems Technology program, which began in fall 2009, covers the fundamentals of nuclear power systems including nuclear plant components, radiological protection, reactor theory, and nuclear plant chemistry.

“The MTC program was created at the request of South Carolina Electric & Gas Company to supply the company’s expansion of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station with qualified nuclear technicians,” said MTC President Dr. Marshall (Sonny) White, Jr. The V.C. Summer plant, located within the college’s service area in Fairfield County, is scheduled to go on line with a new reactor in 2016, with one more reactor scheduled to start up in 2019.

The expansion of the V.C. Summer facilities is expected to require 20 new nuclear technicians per year between 2012 and 2016. In addition, projected retirements in the current nuclear power workforce could require up to 15 new technicians each year beginning in 2010.

“The availability of scholarships will greatly enhance MTC’s engineering eepartment recruiting and retention efforts for the nuclear program,” said Dr. Clint Chandler, chair of MTC’s engineering technology and engineering transfer department. “The primary objectives of the scholarship program are to award scholarships to highly qualified students and provide a supportive network of services to assist in the student's academic progress.”
